Wake, surf and ski boats

Buy the tow boat, not the option sheet

An inboard tow boat has a long build sheet and an engine that works hard every hour it runs. We sort out which boat fits the way your crew rides, then negotiate it on your behalf.

Pick the drive layout before you pick the brand

Where the engine sits and where the propeller spins decide what a tow boat is good at, and whether anyone should surf behind it. A wakesurfer rides a few feet off the swim platform, mostly without a rope, so the propeller has to be tucked under the hull, well forward of the transom.

Traditional inboards do that by design. A direct drive puts the engine amidships with a straight shaft running aft, which keeps the wake flat and soft for slalom skiers. A V-drive moves the engine to the stern and turns the shaft back under the boat through a gearbox. The weight sits where a wake is made, and the cockpit opens up.

Ballast and surf systems are plumbing, and plumbing fails

A modern wake boat makes its wave with water weight. Hard tanks are built into the hull and filled by pumps. Bags do the same job in lockers and under seats, fitted at the factory or added by an owner later. Tanks are tidy. Bags hold more, but their fittings weep, and an overfilled bag can push on seat bases and hatch lids.

The pumps matter as much as the tanks. Reversible pumps use a flexible rubber impeller that wears, and running one dry can ruin it quickly. We want to see every tank and bag fill and drain on the water. The same goes for surf tabs and plates at the transom: each actuator should deploy, retract and hold under load.

Every hour on a tow boat is a working hour. Price the engine that way.

Why tow boat hours are harder than runabout hours

A family runabout spends much of its life at an easy cruise. A surf boat spends its life shoving a heavily ballasted hull through the water at low speed, under high load the whole time. Our guide to boat engine hours covers how to read the number. On a tow boat, the service records behind it matter more.

Cooling is the other half. Many inboards are raw-water cooled, meaning lake water runs straight through the block and exhaust manifolds. In salt or brackish water that shortens the life of manifolds and risers, and even a closed cooling system, which keeps coolant in the block, still sends raw water through parts of the exhaust. Ask where the boat has been used, and do not take "fresh water only" on faith when the trailer is rusty.

Used tow boats

Six places a used wake boat hides its history

Shiny gelcoat and a loud stereo say nothing about how a boat was run or stored.

  1. Running gear

Prop, shaft, strut and rudder take the hit in a grounding. Look for a reworked prop or repaired strut, and feel for vibration under load on the water test.

  2. Freeze damage

In cold climates, one missed winterization can crack a block or manifold. We look for milky oil, fresh sealant on the block, and dated winterization records.

  3. Tower and hinges

Folding towers loosen at the pivots. Check for rattles, worn bushings, cracks in the deck around the mounts, and chafed speaker or light wiring.

  4. Gelcoat and spider cracks

Fine cracks near cleats and corners are often cosmetic. Cracks that radiate from one point suggest an impact or flexing underneath.

  5. Upholstery and sun damage

Tow boats carry a lot of vinyl. Split seams, hard or pink-stained vinyl and sagging foam point to years of sun and trapped moisture, and a full reskin is a large bill.

  6. Trailer

Tire age, brake function, bearings, bunk carpet and lights. Check the rated capacity against the boat's real weight with fuel and gear.

New boat pricing

A tow boat MSRP is mostly options

The base price in a brochure describes a boat almost nobody orders. Packages can make up a large share of the sticker, and that is where two quotes on the "same" model drift apart.

We line up quotes option by option, then negotiate the boat and each line under it. Our boat dealer fees guide explains the freight, prep and documentation charges.

  • Engine upgradeOften the single largest option. Heavy ballast and a full crew can justify it. A light ski crew usually cannot.
  • Surf and ballast packagesFrequently bundled, so check what the base boat already includes.
  • Tower and audioPower-folding towers, tower speakers and amplifiers add up fast and return little at resale.
  • Color and interiorPremium gelcoat schemes, flooring and upholstery upgrades are lines with room to negotiate.
  • TrailerSometimes included, sometimes not. Confirm the exact trailer in writing.

Process

How we work a tow boat deal

  1. Match the boat to the riding

Skiing, boarding and surfing pull in different directions. We settle the drive layout, length, ballast and power before searching.

  2. Search wide and compare like with like

We look across dealers and private sellers and compare every candidate on model year, engine, options, hours and trailer. If a tritoon with a tow bar would suit you better, we will say so.

  3. Use the model-year calendar

Builders roll to the next model year before the season ends, and outgoing boats often carry incentives as dealers make room. We cover timing in the best time to buy a boat.

  4. Verify, then close

On a used boat we help you arrange an independent survey and sea trial, and we read the purchase agreement line by line. Our flat fee is agreed in writing up front. See how pricing works.

Tow boat questions

What wake boat buyers ask us

How many hours is too many on a used wake boat?

There is no single cutoff. A well-serviced inboard with documented oil changes, impellers and winterizing can be a better buy than a low-hour boat that sat for years. We weigh hours against records and the sea trial.

Can I use a wake boat in salt water?

You can. Look for closed cooling, flush the engine and ballast system after each use, and expect manifolds, risers and trailer parts to need attention sooner. On a used boat, salt history should move the price.

Is a direct drive still worth buying?

For a household that mainly skis, yes. Direct drives track well and throw a soft, flat wake,. They are a poor choice if surfing is the goal.

Should I finance a new wake boat over a long term?

Long marine loan terms make an expensive boat look affordable by the month. Run the total interest first with our boat loan calculator.

Tell us how your crew rides. We will find the hull.

Ski, board, surf or all three. Share your water, crew size and budget, and we will come back with the right layout and a plan to buy it well.
