Boat engine hours: what counts as high, and what matters more than the number
Every used boat listing leads with engine hours, as if the figure worked like a car's odometer. It does not. Hours tell you how long an engine ran. They say nothing about how it was run, how it was kept, or how long it sat.
Judge hours per year, not hours in total
Recreational boats do not run much. As a general range, a family boat sees somewhere around 30 to 100 hours a year, toward the low end where the season is four months long and toward the high end where people boat year-round. Divide the hours on a listing by the age of the engine and you have the first useful number.
An engine inside that range has had an ordinary life. One far above it may have worked as a charter, rental or club boat, which is worth asking about but is not automatically bad. Engines that run often and get serviced on schedule tend to stay healthy. An engine far below the range deserves more suspicion.
Treat very low hours on an old engine as a warning
A fifteen-year-old boat with almost no hours did not get gentle use. It got long stretches of no use. Sitting is hard on marine engines. Fuel goes stale and leaves varnish in injectors and carburetors. Rubber impellers take a set and crack on the first start. Seals and hoses dry out, and corrosion keeps working whether the key is turned or not.
That is no reason to pass on a low-hour boat. It means "low hours" does not justify a higher price until you know how the boat was stored and serviced.
Boats wear out from neglect far more often than from use.
Verify hours from the engine computer, not the dash
An analog hour meter is a simple clock. Most are wired to the ignition, so they count key-on time, including an afternoon at the sandbar with the stereo running. They can also fail or be replaced with a new one reading zero. A dash meter is a claim, not evidence.
Modern outboards, and many sterndrive and inboard engines, store total hours in the engine control unit. A dealer or mechanic with the manufacturer's diagnostic tool can print a report. On many engines that report also breaks the hours into RPM bands, along with stored fault codes and alarm history. An engine with most of its hours at cruising speeds lived a different life from one that spent much of its time near wide open, or one with a history of overheat alarms.
Read "high hours" differently for each engine type
There is no single number. A figure that is unremarkable on a diesel cruiser would be a lot on a personal watercraft. In general terms, diesels are built heavier, turn slower and are commonly expected to run several times as long as a gasoline engine before a major overhaul. Modern four-stroke outboards, serviced on schedule, run for thousands of hours in commercial use. On gasoline sterndrives and inboards, the engine often outlasts the parts around it.
Use matters as much as type. Hours on wake and surf boats are hard hours: the engine pushes a heavily ballasted hull under constant load, closer to towing uphill than to cruising. Offshore center consoles run long distances at steady cruise, which is easy on the engine, but they do it in salt. And a personal watercraft engine spends much of its life at high RPM, so PWC hours count for more than boat hours.

Weigh records, tests and water type above the meter
- Maintenance records. Dated invoices for oil, impellers, gear oil, anodes and winterizing. Shops normally write engine hours on each invoice, which gives you a timeline to check the meter against.
- Compression or leak-down test. A compression test shows whether cylinders are even. A leak-down test goes further and shows where pressure is escaping.
- Oil analysis. A lab can find metals, coolant or fuel in an oil sample. One sample is a snapshot, so read it alongside records.
- Salt or fresh water. A freshwater engine with high hours often looks better inside than a saltwater engine with few. For a salt boat, ask whether it was flushed after every trip.
An independent marine survey covers the hull and systems. Many surveyors do not test engines in depth, so on a costlier boat we suggest a separate inspection by a mechanic who knows that make.
Read the listing with the full picture in mind

The bottom line
Divide hours by years first. Be wary of an old engine that barely ran, and be open to a busy engine with a thick service file. Before you make an offer, ask for the engine computer report with the serial number on it and the service invoices. If the seller has neither, price the boat as though the hours are unknown, because they are.
